VIDEO Happy 70th Birthday Goldie Hawn, How Goldie Changed Hollywood, Broke Down Sexism Barriers

Goldie Hawn turned 70 on November 21, but she’s not letting age stop her! Hawn was spotted with her daughter, Kate Hudson, on a girl getaway. As Goldie and Kate rolled through the airport, both women kept it cool with tank tops and shades, reports the Daily Mail.

The vacation was well deserved for Hawn, who’s film career has spanned five decades, and who broke down barriers for women like Reese Witherspoon to make female-centered films. Goldie is embracing her golden years, telling Porter magazine that “[g]etting older is a fact of life” and rather than fight aging, and by “living mindfully you understand that there are many transitions in life.”

The grandmother of five plans to “just go through them,” because as she turns 70, Hawn has realized that happiness is “all in your mind,” reports the Daily Mail. During an interview with Oprah, Hawn revealed that at the age of 11, she “made a very definitive decision, and my decision was that I wanted to be happy,” reports E! Online.

“Above and beyond anything I ever did in my life, I wanted to be happy,” Hawn insists. Hawn also waxed philosophical, telling Porter magazine that it is “wonderful to know you’re aging because that means you’re still on the planet, right?”

Although Goldie Hawn has been with partner Kurt Russell since 1983, she never married him, telling the media that she has not “found ourselves in a marriage situation.” Hawn believes that since she’s been “married twice,” she knows that things can turn south very quickly. According to Goldie, the “reality of ‘Oh, oh, oh’ in Beyoncé’s Single Ladies can turn into a (depressed tone) ‘Oh, oh, oh.’”

As for marriage, “once you’ve done it once, you’ve done it twice and you realize that marriage, or the act of marrying, has nothing to do with the success,” Hawn advises. Goldie confessed that daily, she asks whether she wants to be in her relationship, asking herself “[h]ow can it flourish and do I want to be there?” “Any marriage, any ceremony, any ring will not define that truth,” Hawn believes according to the Daily Mail. Although at age 70 Goldie Hawn is a lauded actress with several Academy Awards under her belt, Hawn has not acted in 13 years, preferring instead to focus on her family, which includes actress Kate Hudson, and her MindUP program, reports E! Online. During her extensive career, Goldie Hawn is known for one thing: Breaking down barriers for future actresses-turned-producers, like Reese Witherspoon, Sandra Bullock and Drew Barrymore. With more light being shed on sexism in Hollywood, Goldie Hawn stood out during the beginning of her career in Hollywood. Beginning her career as an actress, being cast in the sitcom Good Morning, World in 1967, Hawn became a household name when she was cast in the comedy show Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In. She was cast in her first major movie role in Cactus Flower, winning the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.

In 1979, Goldie Hawn’s life changed when she was asked to star in Private Benjamin, a film that told the story of a spoiled woman who decides to enlist in the army. Instead of bringing on a producer, Hawn decided to produce the film with Nancy Meyers and Charles Shyer, projecting Goldie into a different role as an actor and a producer. Her decision was relatively unheard of at the time, but was made to save her then-marriage. According to E! Online, Hawn thought if she produced instead of acted all the time, it might not be “too late to make my marriage work.” Goldie believed that if her “new production company takes off, giving me a little more control over the movies I produce and can make for other people,” then her marriage might be saved.

While producing Private Benjamin, Goldie recalled she would bring Kate with her, as a baby, to meetings, and the movie was “a bigger, fatter success than I could ever have imagined,” calling it’s success “the most thrilling time in my professional career.” Goldie earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress for Private Benjamin. Although her contributions to women in Hollywood can’t be denied, Goldie Hawn now wants to focus on family, and celebrating her 70th birthday.
