Dame Helen Mirren basically won the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday night when she commemorated pop legend Prince.
Turning up in a Purple Rain-inspired lace gown and sporting a purple Love Symbol tattoo just below her collarbone, the veteran actress paid the perfect tribute to the late singer.
Pointing to the hand-drawn tattoo honouring the singer, the Oscar winner called Prince a ‘great artist’ who she admired.
‘I admire great artists and he was a great artist,’ she told The Washington Post.
Mirren added that she wished the ‘tattoo’ had a better back story than the truth – which is that she did it herself.’
She confessed: ‘I’d love to say that Prince himself did it in 1988 or something, instead of me in the bathroom this morning.’
Mirren received a special mention from President Barack Obama during his speech at the dinner. He said: ‘Helen Mirren is here tonight.
‘I don’t even have a joke here, I just think Helen Mirren is awesome. She’s awesome.’
Mirren is currently starring in technological war thriller, Eye In The Sky, as Colonel Katherine Powell, a military intelligence officer leading a top-secret drone operation on a mission that quickly spirals out of control.
