The blast was reported around 8 a.m. in the 100 block of North Broadway.
A contractor, Kline Construction, was working on gas lines in the area and struck a main, according to the local police chief.
The gas built up in the basement and the pilot in the heater caused the explosion, authorities say.
Police Chief Allen Cummings explains there’s a reason why his department responded so quickly to the scene, telling us, “The police station is right across the street. We actually heard the explosion. When we got over here the building was totally engulfed in flames.”
Fortunately, rescuers say, no one was injured.
