Carrie Fisher: Banning Princess Leia’s Bikini Is ‘Stupid’

In late October, the Marvel artist J. Scott Campbell said that Disney was “well on its way to wiping out” any merchandise featuring Star Wars’ Princess — er, now General Leia in her notorious slave-bikini outfit from Return of the Jedi. And there was much rending of garments. Now Carrie Fisher herself has weighed in on this foofaraw.

To The Wall Street Journal, Fisher was asked about the discontinuation of merchandise featuring her character in the skimpy getup. “I think that’s stupid,” Fisher replied instantly.

She then brought up a parent who “flipped out about it” (in this report back in July). For any flop-sweating dad unsure of what to tell his young daughter or son, Fisher said:

“Tell them that a giant slug captured me and forced me to wear that stupid outfit, and then I killed him because I didn’t like it.”

She’s got a point there. Though in a making-of documentary from the time, Fisher laughingly admitted to liking Jabba’s character as a guy who “is what he is” — a gluttonous, grotesque burlesque aficionado, apparently.

Just 13 more shopping days until Star Wars: The Force Awakens premieres.
