DAYTON — Dayton police say they believe the shooting that killed a pastor inside a church about noon Sunday was a domestic situation involving the pastor’s brother.
According to Dayton Police Sgt. Creigee Coleman, officers found the Rev. William Schooler, 70, dead, apparently from multiple gunshot wounds.
“The victim received multiple gunshot wounds from a handgun and he succumbed to his injuries and at this point the suspect is in the hands of the homicide detectives,” Sgt. Coleman said.
Beulah Booker-Robinson was in church when the shooting happened.
“This man walked in and sat down. We were singing and pastor just got through with the morning prayer and went back in his office and after the offering this man got up and walked in the back in the study where pastor was and we hear boom booms and the usher on the door said everybody run out,” Booker-Robinson said.
Daniel Schooler, William Schooler’s brother, has been arrested and is expected to be charged.
Coleman did not suggest a motive for the shooting. The sergeant said officers responding to the scene at 3302 Nancy Avenue on the city’s west side did treat the call as an active-shooter scenario. Coleman said they found Daniel Schooler in the church, and he did not resist arrest.
“The officers did exactly what they were trained to do. They knew there was a shooter inside, with no regard to their safety they went in to save the people that were inside. The officers did exactly what they were trained to do in this situation, which possibly and probably saved lives,” Coleman said.
