Disney has revealed a drone that takes the shape of the legendary Milllennium Falcon, a spacecraft recognizable to every Star Wars fan.
The Millennium Falcon is a quadcopter created by Air Hogs, a manufacturer of sky and land remote-controlled toys. As expected, this drone can be also be controlled by a remote and features light and sound effects coming straight out of the Star Wars movie franchise.
The remote-controlled drone is made from high-density foam to make it light and durable. It has an operational range of 60 meters, which is around 196 feet.
Air Hogs also announced another Star Wars toy – a remote control X-Wing that features a small R2D2 and a couple of propellers.
While the Millennium Falcon drone was demonstrated at Fan Expo Canada in Toronto, the X-Wing starfighter was not demoed, probably due to safety reasons.
Amazon has already started selling the Millennium Falcon drone at a discount. The original price tag of the gadget is $109.99 but Amazon is selling it for $88.
“Now you can fly the most iconic ship in the Star Wars universe: the Millennium Falcon Quad with iconic LED lights and authentic sounds!” per Amazon’s product description. “The Millennium Falcon uses 4 rotors concealed ion the body of the ship for agile, space-like flight!”
The Millennium Falcon drone is recommended to users aged 8 or above. Six AA batteries are needed to power the drone, which can be used indoors as well as outdoors.
The Millennium Falcon drone and X-Wing starfighter will not only attract Star Wars fans but many other drone enthusiasts.
“For the entire toy industry, it is one of the most exciting new launches,” says Laurie Schacht, chief toy officer for ToyInsider.com. “That is a no-brainer.”
Target, Walmart and Toys ‘R’ Us will also sell the latest drone in their stores.
The Millennium Falcon will be available for purchase from Sept. 4 onwards. Many other Star Wars merchandise will also be sold on the same day, dubbed Force Friday to drum up some hype for the upcoming Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens.
