Donald Glover ‘Childish Gambino’ Booed Off Stage in Newcastle

Fans are demanding refunds following a disastrous sold-out Childish Gambino show at The Cambridge Hotel in Newcastle that ended with the rapper being booed off stage.

The gig had been advertised as a live show but Gambino – AKA Community star Donald Glover – reportedly spent most of the show in a dark back corner of the stage behind a laptop before finally breaking his silence after about 40 minutes for a brief freestyle performance.

“As his crew left the stage, the crowd chanted obscenities and heckled as he performed a solo falsetto song and left the stage,” reports The Newcastle Herald. “The rapper appeared visibly shocked at the crowd response, which included obscenities and insults aimed at him traced in perspiration on the venue’s glass wall.”

Punters have taken to Twitter and Facebook to vent their anger, blasting the set as “atrocious karaoke”, “the worst gig I’ve ever been to” and “a massive middle finger to Newcastle”. Writing on the venue’s Facebook page one fan even claims that the show destroyed her love for the rapper: “I can’t watch Community in the same way because seeing his face hurts my soul, and forget about listening to his music for a while because that’s only going to be rubbing salt into an open wound.”

Neither The Cambridge Hotel or the promoters of the show, Big Apachee, have commented on the gig. But Gambino has cancelled his Listen Out festival sideshow in Canberra tonight night claiming that that the “busy touring schedule taking a toll”. He made no comment on the shows when he appeared on triple j this morning for a Like a Version performance and is scheduled to appear at the Listen Out festivals in Sydney and Brisbane over the weekend.
