The Legend of Tarzan – Warner Brothers’ upcoming action/adventure film starring Margot Robbie and Alexander Skarsgard as Jane and the king of the jungle, Tarzan – has unveiled its first stills from the film, depicting a hot and steamy look at a revamped take on the literary classic.
Directed by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows’ David Yates, the film will reportedly pick up with Tarzan having already left his wild domain of the jungle, replacing it with civilization in the form of Victorian London.
Gone is the ape-like man raised in a simian culture – Tarzan is now a member of a civilized society, who finds himself brought back to the Congo as the emissary of Parliament.
Upon reuniting with old friends, Tarzan soon learns that his beloved wife, Jane, is in danger – and thus a new vine-swinging, jungle-crossing adventure roars to life.
While based on the classic Edgar Rice Burroughs novels, star Alexander Skarsgard says of the new iteration, “It’s almost the opposite of the classic tale, where it’s about taming the beast.
This is about a man who’s holding back and slowly as you peel off the layers, he reverts back to a more animalistic state and lets that side of his personality out.” Co-starring Djimon Hounsou as Chief Mbonga, Samuel L. Jackson as true-life adventurer George Washington Williams, and Christoph Waltz as Belgian villain Captain Leon Rom, The Legend of Tarzan features True Bloodactor Alexander Skarsgard as the titular Tarzan. Yates praised his male lead, stating that he carries a “wonderful quality of not quite belonging to one or the other [country].”
The director further shared that his take on Tarzan will be that of a “leaner, longer, more vertical modern man than the square-jawed stereotype we’re used to.”
