Ginger Zee, Wanya Morris and Nyle DiMarco Stand Out in New Season of ‘Dancing With the Stars’

The search for the newest Mirror Ball champion kicked off Monday night.

Season 22 of “Dancing with the Stars” premiered with clear potential finalists already making the mark.

Taking the highest marks of the night were a trio of stars including Wayne Morris of Boys II Men fame, meteorologist Ginger Zee and deaf model Nyle DiMarco.

Meanwhile, landing at the bottom of the score board was journalist Geraldo Rivera.

The long-running reality show returned without the beloved Hough siblings as Julianne Hough is skipping the judging panel this season and Derek Hough announced he isn’t competing.

However, curmudgeon judge Len Goodman came back to deliver his usual dose of nasty comments.

Here’s how the couples fared on their first try:

Kim Fields and Sasha Farber

The “The Facts of Life” child star is all grown up and shaking in on the dance floor.

“It was a great start to the show,” Goodman praised.

The actress danced away with 20 points out of a possible 30.

Paige VanZant and Mark Ballas

The UFC fighter didn’t need to pull punches to make her mark on the ballroom.

The 21-year-old has “great great potential” to take home a win, according to judge Bruno Tonioli.

She earned 21 points.

Doug Flutie and Karina Smirnoff

The former quarterback did not dominate the dance floor.

Instead, judges did what they do best for low-scorers and praised his “commitment.”

Flutie, whose favor with the judges will likely make him the underdog of the season,” took home 15 points.

Jodie Sweetin and Keo Motsepe

Pin a rose on her nose because Sweetin can still move just like Stephanie Tanner could.

“Very impressive,” judge Carrie Ann Inaba remarked.

However, Goodman wasn’t a fan calling the number “hectic.”

The “Fuller House” star continued her TV comeback with 20 points, falling to the middle of the pack.

Geraldo Rivera and Edyta Sliwinska

No investigation needed on why this performance fell flat.

“Maybe, you’re gonna dance next week,” Tonioli said.

The 72-year-old’s cha-cha was all kinds of awkward and fetched the lowest score of the night at 13 points.

But, at least it marked the return of pro Edyta Sliwinska — though for how long is up to viewers.

Marla Maples and Tony Dovolani

The 52-year-old seems to have aged better than her famous ex.

Donald Trump’s ex-wife wowed on the dance floor, even delivering a cartwheel.

Her routine earned 21 points, as well obvious joy from Dovaloni who is usually paired with the low scorers.

Wanya Morris and Lindsay Arnold

The boy band member remarked if “if this fat white boy can do it, I can,” referencing Joey Fatone coming in second place years ago.

And, he wasn’t wrong.

“You can make it to the end of the road,” Goodman said.

The R&B singer fetched 23 points, typing him at the top for the night.

Ginger Zee and Val Chmerkovskiy

The “Good Morning America” star earned perhaps the highest praise of the night, with Inaba comparing her “infectious” energy to reigning champion Bindi Irwin.

Goodman, meanwhile, called her dance floor’s “ray of sunshine.”

Her jive earned 23 points.

Mischa Barton and Artem Chigvintsev

Fans waiting for the “O.C.” star to make her comeback should keep waiting.

Barton, who has kept a low profile since being killed of the hit show, seemed to be dancing with two left feet, according to the trio of judges.

“That wasn’t a dance, that was walking” Goodman said.

Nyle DiMarco and Peta Murgatroyd

It’s very possible he’ll be America’s next top dancer.

The deaf model stunned judges with his routine, which earned 23 points.

“Shut up are you for real?” asked an amazed Tonioli.

“It just got better and better,” added Goodman.

Antonio Brown and Sharna Burgess

The NFL superstar’s moves scored a touchdown –and made a possible super fan out of Inaba.

“You’re magic!” she said. “You’re fantastic.”

The Pittsburgh Steelers’ player ended the night with 21 points.

Von Miller and Witney Carson

The Super Bowl MVP didn’t lag behind Brown.

His foxtrot was a solid first dance for judges, who praised him for his charisma.

The Denver Broncos linebacker was awarded 21 points.

Freeform defends Halle Bailey's casting as Ariel in "The Little Mermaid"!

Just in case you haven’t heard, Halle Bailey is the new Ariel, in an upcoming “The Little Mermaid” movie! She has been receiving messages from fans and other celebrities, congratulating her for landing the role!

Amongst those who congratulated her is Halle Berry, in a tweet she posted, “In case you needed a reminder… Halles get it DONE. Congratulations @chloexhalle on this amazing opportunity, we can’t wait to see what you!” She also added that she was “thrilled” for the 19 year old. However, not everyone was happy about Disney’s decision to cast a black woman for this role.

Some critics went as far as petitioning Disney to recast for this role, and titled their petition #NotMyAriel!  They suggested that Halle should be replaced by a white woman with red hair,  who would resemble the Ariel that they know from the 1989 animated version of The Little Mermaid. Now Freeform, Disney’s cable network, has decided to issue an open letter in response to this.

The letter read, “Yes. The original author of The Little Mermaid was Danish. Ariel…is a mermaid. She lives in an underwater kingdom in international waters and can legit swim wherever she wants (even though that often upsets King Triton, absolute zaddy). But for the sake of argument, let’s say that Ariel, too, is Danish”.

Freeform also added that, “Danish mermaids can be black because Danish *people* can be black. Ariel can sneak up to the surface at any time with her pals Scuttle and the *ahem* Jamaican crab Sebastian (sorry, Flounder!) and keep that bronze base tight. Black Danish people, and this mer-folk, can also *genetically* (!!!) have red hair”! Freeform then went on to remind the critics that Ariel and the story, is only fictional!

The critic tweeted, “It’s like something is off here, maybe the lions look too real for voice-overs. And I know Nala is Beyonce but it sounds very Beyonce. It’s so distracting…”! Another also posted, “Okay I’m going to be brave and say this but I don’t think I like Beyonce as Nala. I wish she had just done the soundtrack but her voice doesn’t suit Nala. Hope I’m wrong…”!

Another Twitter user suggested that Queen Bey should have tried to change her voice to suit the character, saying her voice is “too distinct for this. It doesn’t even sound like she attempted to change the sound of her voice for the character”.
