HBO Drama Game of Thrones Season 6 Casts New Red Priestess

HBO Drama Game of Thrones Season 6 Casts New Red Priestess

[SPOILERS ahead for Game of Thrones season 6.]

Games of Thrones‘ upcoming sixth season is largely shrouded in mystery at the moment, even for those fans who have read George R.R. Martin’s first five A Song of Ice and Fire source novels. Martin’s sixth book, titled “The Winds of Winter”, may or may not be released sometime before Thrones returns to HBO; in the meantime, everyone else shall be left to wonder how much or little Thrones’ season 6 narrative is going to deviate from developments in “Winds of Winter” (even as both the TV show and its source books continue to move towards the same endpoint).

Every Game of Thrones season to date has brought with it an assortment of new characters – some of which may or may not still be alive by the season’s conclusion – and season 6 will be no different, in that respect. So far, the casting additions have ranged from bigger name TV veterans (Ian McShane) to somewhat lesser-known TV actors (Joe Naufahu) and that trend continues with today’s news, revealing some intriguing plot/character details that involve the city-state of Meereen.

Deadline is reporting that Melanie Liburd, who has recently made one-off episode appearances on shows like DraculaCSI, and most recently the pilot for The Grinder, will play a Red Priestess on Game of Thrones season 6. The Deadline report indicates Liburd is playing a different version of Melisandre a.k.a. The Red Woman (Carice Van Houten) – who, when last we saw her, had just arrived at The Wall in the northern border of the Seven Kingdoms.

However, leaked set photos (see below) have already shown that Liburd is playing a different character altogether – one who figures into the Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) narrative thread. Liburd herself confirmed she’s filming in Spain, though it’s now safe to say her scenes take place in Meereen.

Not much is known about Liburd’s character, as the Game of Thrones season 6 casting call description for “Priestess” (presumably, the same one Liburd is playing) unhelpfully summed up the woman as just “beautiful, intense, and magnetic.”

Meanwhile, Watchers On the Wall has posted additional leaked photos from the Game of Thrones‘ set in Spain that show graffiti on the streets of Meereen that read “Mhysa is a Master” – alongside the words “Kill the Masters” that were plastered around the city-stae during season 5 – indicating that Daenerys has become less popular with the locals, after her near-assassination (and escape by dragon) when last we saw her. Question is, will Liburd’s Priestess wind up preaching against or in favor of greater support for the Khaleesi?
