Houston Texans Release Ryan Mallett

The Houston Texans have decided to relieve QB Ryan Mallett of his duties today.

This is news that comes off the heels of an interesting football weekend that saw the released QB miss the team plane to their confrontation with the Miami Dolphins. Instead of traveling with the team Mallett took a commercial flight. Texans coaches have long sought for stability at the position under center, having had a miriad of names starting within the past few years. It was no secret, however, that Texans head coach Bill O’ Brien wanted Mallett removed from the team after this latest slip up. According to some sources the Texans GM had to stop Coach O’ Brien from cutting the quarterback previously.

As a QB Ryan Mallett hasn’t been anything special. His numbers this year are mediocre at best with 770 passing yards, three touchdowns and four picks through three games. Currently the staring quarterback for the Texans is Brian Hoyer.

It remains to be seen if Mallett ends up with a QB needy team like the Dallas Cowboys, Pittsburgh Steelers or Cleveland Browns, or if he watches the rest of the season from the comfort of the unemployment couch. I’m fairly certain that if his phone rings for a new job that he won’t miss the flight for that conversation.
