More than 300 million people now use Instagram on a daily basis. It’s total number of users has more than doubled within the last two years alone. It has surpassed other social media giants such as Twitter and now boasts more than 500 million users, 80% of which come from outside the United States.
“500 million is a milestone very few companies get to,” said Instagram’s CEO Kevin Systrom. “This scale is not a badge on our uniform, but a signal of our ambition. If we can have a billion or a billion and a half on Instagram, we get closer to capturing every experience in the world.”
“It’s grown to be very global, which I believe comes from the fact that images are a universal language,” Systrom said, noting that the spread of Internet access and mobile devices has also propelled the app’s growth. “It’s not just photographers or tech mavens in Silicon Valley using it.”
Instagram was launched in 2010 and purchased by Facebook in 2012 for $1 billion. It has since then had to ward off a number of criticisms ranging from an accusation that it intended to sell users’ pictures to advertisers to discontent over it changing its logo from a camera to a small rainbow design.
“Before we launched it, I knew that it would be a tough time for Instagram,” Mr Systrom disclosed.
“What separates companies that make transitions like that and they are successful and the ones that fail, are the ones that have resolve and do it for the right reasons.
“We wanted to create a mark that was universal. We did all these studies of companies and how their marks have evolved over time.
“What you see is they go from complex to simpler and simpler and more iconic. We skipped a few steps, and we went straight to iconic.”
