Laurie Hernandez Takes Silver in Balance Beam as Simone Biles Takes Bronze After Fall

An American won’t take the gold in the women’s balance beam final.

Simone Biles struggled on her routine. From the beginning, it seemed as though she was slightly off-balance. Then, after an extremely difficult flip, she nearly fell off the beam, and had to use her hands to steady herself. The crowd gasped. After the routine, Laurie Hernandez came over and gave her a hug.

Next was Sanne Wevers from the Netherlands. She scored an impressive 15.466, taking the lead.

Hernandez was up a few minutes later. Her routine was stronger – she scored a 15.333 – good enough for second place behind Wevers.

“I’m proud of you,” Biles told her teammate after her impressive routine.

For the first time ever, a Dutch gymnast took the gold. Hernandez took the silver and Biles earned bronze.

Biles, the Olympic all-around champ, already has three golds from the team final, the all-around and the vault. She was poised to take gold in the beam final after earning the highest score during qualifying with a 15.633. But after her stumble, it was teammate Hernandez who delivered a stunning performance in her best event.
