Lions To Fire O.C. Joe Lombardi

It is being reported that the Detroit Lions will fire offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi as well as offensive line coaches Jeremiah Washburn and Terry Heffernan.

The Lions have transformed themselves from a near unwatchable car crash of a team to must see television in a number of years. With the inclusion of top draft pick Matthew Stafford at quarterback and a dominant weapon on the outside like Calvin Johnson the Lions have given the Detroit faithful hope for the future. But this year we’re seeing a much different team, which is much like the team people are used to seeing from years past.

This Lions team currently sits at 1-6 with their lone win coming against the equally hapless Chicago Bears. They currently rank 7th in the league in passing yards per game, but the average is under 300 yards. The running game is nonexistent with 68 yards per game on the ground (ranked last in the league). With the talent on the field every week these numbers are laughable and the exact type of stats that get people fired. That thought process usually calls for a complete spring cleaning, much like the recent situation with the Miami Dolphins. The axe hasn’t reached Lions head coach Jim Caldwell yet, but with the way the team is trending this season it seems like it’s only a matter of time.
