Meigs County, Ohio: 9-Year-Old Football Player Dies After Practice

MEIGS COUNTY, Ohio — A 9-year-old boy died during a youth football practice Monday evening.

Meigs County Sheriff Keith Wood says Wyatt Barber was participating in the Big Bend Youth Football League when a coach found him on the ground unconscious and apparently not breathing.

Sheriff Wood says players had just taken a break from running sprints.

The coaches immediately contacted EMS and started CPR on the Barber before he was taken to the Meigs Emergency Room where he passed away.

The Meigs County Coroner was contacted and met officers at the emergency room.

Wood says the practice at that time was just a walk through and not a contact practice.

Eastern Local School Superintendent Scott Gheen released the following statement:

“The staff, students, and community of Eastern Local would like to express our sincere condolences to the family during this very unfortunate time. The school has put in place grief counseling services to assist the students and staff in need. Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time.”

The team was practicing at Eastern High School. The medical emergency was reported just before 7:30 p.m.

Barber was in the third grade at Eastern Elementary.

A cause of death has not been released.

A GoFundMe account has been established to help the family.
