OPINION: When People are More Fascinated by an Actor Fighting Human Trafficking Than Human Trafficking Itself

Let’s focus less on talking about the fact that a famous actor, Ashton Kutcher, co-founded a software to combat human trafficking; and instead, converse about how modern slavery still exists and how to help fight it.

Thorn, focuses on eradicating sex trafficking and child exploitation over the Internet. Since the organization was introduced in 2008, they have identified and rescued over 6,000 trafficking victims and captured over 2,000 traffickers.

“I’ve seen video content of a child that’s the same age as mine being raped by an American Man that was a sex tourist in Cambodia. And this child was so conditioned by her environment that she thought she was engaging in play”, Kutcher speaks at Capitol Hill.

Ashton Kutcher walks with Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN) before testifying on Capitol Hill on February 15, 2017, in Washington, DC.

Over the years, the United Nations, International Non-Governmental Organizations, human rights activists, and individuals have all stepped up efforts in order to end the trade. However, due to the high rate of unemployment and rising poverty levels in some nations, the trade is still secretly thriving, as Anonymous News states.

Kutcher is just a person trying to diminish another conflict in the world. Yet, people are more captivated by the fact that an actor is rising up against a social injustice.

If it takes an actor to get people to pay attention to human slavery that exists in 2017, the real problem lays in society.

Kutcher is actually being attacked by ‘internet trolls’ who deem the actor is raising awareness for his own benefit, or that “he should stick to his day job”.

“My day job is as the chairman and the co-founder of Thorn. We build software to fight human trafficking and sexual exploitation of children,” Kutcher stresses.

He’s just a human being who is facilitating help for human trafficking victims. And he’s not doing it by sitting behind a computer screen and sending out hateful messages on Twitter whilst completely disregarding an actual issue.

“My other day job is that of the father of two, a 2-month-old and a 2-year-old”, stated passionately by Kutcher.

What? Kutcher is a father? You mean, he actually has a life outside of acting? Shocker.

As a society, we become so accustomed to seeing celebrities, specifically actors, as being limited to the one role of acting. But maybe they also want to see the world be a better place for generations to come, just like any other average human.

“When people are left out, when they’re neglected, when they’re not supported, and when they’re not given the love they need to grow, it becomes an incubator for trafficking, and this refugee crisis, if we want to be serious about ending slavery, we cannot ignore them, we cannot ignore our support for this issue in that space, because otherwise, we’re going to have to deal with it for years to come,” stated by Kutcher.
