Peachtree Street, Atlanta: Handcuffed Man Jumps from Window in Downtown Building

ATLANTA — Police are investigating why a handcuffed man jumped from the third story window of a downtown Atlanta building.

The scene at 34 Peachtree Street was chaotic as police and emergency officials investigated the incident.

The man survived the three-story fall onto the street but police say he was listed in “very critical condition” at Grady Memorial Hospital.

Fulton County deputies said the man was at the Fulton County Pretrial Services facing a drug charge and was going to be going through pretrial intervention. Deputies later found a weapon so the man was placed in handcuffs. At some point later this morning, he broke away from deputies and jumped through the window.

Authorities say the man fell face-first onto the sidewalk below.

Atlanta Police Deputy Chief Spillane confirmed that the person was handcuffed at the time of the fall.

The roads between Auburn and Marietta Street northwest are closed as authorities investigate.

“All streets around the location are blocked,” Atlanta fire spokeswoman Janet Ward said.
