Phoenix Highway Shootings Suspect in Custody, Police Say

A suspect has been taken into custody in connection with a string of shooting incidents on the I-10 freeway in Arizona, according to police and the governor.

According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, the suspect is Leslie Allen Merritt Jr., 21.

At a press conference, DPS Director Frank Milstead announced the arrest in the shootings that happened on August 29 and 31, and that the suspect is in custody. Milstead also said that they know the suspect is related to the first four shootings due to the weapon known to be forensically involved in those shootings.

According to the Associated Press, Merritt was taken into custody at a Wal-Mart in Glendale around 7 p.m. local time.

Some 11 incidents have been logged outside the Phoenix area since Aug. 29, terrifying motorists, the Associated Press said.

Some of the incidents involved bullets and others projectiles, the AP said. Milstead said that it is possible there are copycats out there, and that the investigation goes on. The incidents started on Aug. 29 when a bullet hit the windshield of an SUV, leaving a 13-year-old girl injured. In other cases, a tour bus was hit as well as other vehicles.
