Police Officer Found Fatally Shot Inside Cruiser in Downey, California


DOWNEY, CALIFORNIA— SWAT team members searched for two suspects Thursday who are believed to have fatally shot a Downey police officer.

Shortly after midnight, officers were sent to the area of Downey Avenue and Gardendale for a report of shots fired, according to the Downey Police Department.

Upon their arrival, authorities located a vehicle that matched a suspect description. A police pursuit subsequently began.

Officers said three suspects bailed on foot in the area of Washington Boulevard and Carob Way in Montebello.

A short time later, authorities located a shooting victim inside a police cruiser in the parking lot of the Downey Police Station, located in the 10900 block of Brookshire Avenue.

The victim has been identified as Officer Ricardo Galvez, a five-year U.S. Marine Reservist.

A preliminary investigation revealed the suspects walked up to the police cruiser and opened fire on Galvez who sat inside the vehicle.

Two suspects have been detained for questioning.

The investigation is ongoing.
