Police Wound Man Allegedly Firing Semi-Automatic Rifle Outside Wilkes-Barre Township Walmart Parking Lot

Pennsylvania State Police say a gunman who provoked a shootout with police in a shopping center parking lot near Wilkes-Barre is undergoing surgery for two bullet wounds.

State police Capt. James Degnan said Saturday the man was randomly firing a semi-automatic rifle when local police arrived around 12:30 p.m. When he shot at them, they returned fire. He said multiple rounds were exchanged, but no one else was hurt.

A Walmart superstore and other businesses in Wilkes-Barre Township Marketplace were locked down during the incident.

Degnan said the man was wounded in the abdomen and thigh.

Degnan said investigators are questioning a woman who was with the suspect, but they do not know what prompted the shooting.

The shooter has not yet been identified. Degnan said he wasn’t carrying identification.

Details remained sketchy, but officials at the scene said shots were fired in the early afternoon in a parking lot area between the Walmart, which anchors the small shopping center, and a state liquor store. Businesses were locked down for about 40 minutes, the Wilkes-Barre Times-Leader reported.

Tina Wagner, an assistant manager at the Walmart store, said there no interaction between the shooter and the people in the store.

“We kept all our associates and customers safe,” she said.
