LAKELAND, FL — A Lakeland man with an extensive criminal history is wanted after he was allegedly seen hitting two dogs over their heads and bodies with a sledgehammer. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office says 49-year-old Tad Whitworth has a warrant for his arrest for two counts of felony animal cruelty.
The Sheriff’s Office says the crime occurred on Friday, October 9th, on Countryview Drive in Lakeland. The dogs were taken to Polk County Animal Control where they are being treated for their multiple injuries.
Deputies say Whitworth has an extensive criminal history. He’s been in the Polk County Jail on 10 prior occasions and was just released from state prison in March 2015 after serving a one year sentence. He’s been to state prison four times.
He is 6’3″ tall and 205 lbs. with brown hair and blue eyes, and may be driving an older model white GMC truck. Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call PCSO at 863-298-6200.
