Officials in New York are investigating the death of a woman who waited two days in a holding cell for arraignment on a shoplifting arrest.
Mayor Ernest Davis of Mount Vernon said the woman, Raynette Turner, was found dead Monday afternoon.
Police officials said Ms. Turner, 42, was arrested Saturday at a wholesale food store and was being held for an arraignment. They said that on Sunday night she reported not feeling well and was taken by ambulance to a hospital, then returned to her cell a few hours later.
The officials said Ms. Turner was found dead at 2 p.m. Monday, when she was to be arraigned.
An autopsy is pending.
The death in Texas this month of Sandra Bland, a jailed woman, has drawn national attention. The authorities there have ruled that death a suicide.
