The Brief History About No Wave Music Movement

The no wave movement came out of New York in the mid ’70s , during New York’s brink of bankruptcy and crime upheaval.

The no wave  has been defined as an anti-movement to the new wave, commercial aesthetic bands of the time. Commercial bands like Blondie,The Talking Heads and The Police were the new wave bands ,that the no wave movement was under way against .The no wave had little to no influential roots from CBGB bands ,except a few like Television’s nihilistic poetic lyrical sense , Patti Smith’s high screams and Iggy Pop’s onstage, eccentric demeanor.

No wave a genre with no consistent, singular style of sound by which it was defined. It’s rather known for its experimental ,indefinite genre infusion including sounds from funk, jazz, blues, punk rock and avant-garde.Their lyrics often sung in a nihilistic and confrontationally crude manner.

Lydia Lunch ,a notable no wave founder and previous member of bands like Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, and 8 Eyed Spy ,has been quoted as saying that the no wave music was often angular and dissonant and that it’s jazz and blues influence was  brief. Her exact words of the no wave sound  have been summed up as something that sounds like a”sick people vomiting their brains”.

The official title of the no wave movement supposedly came about due to Brian Eno’s compilation, No Newyork(1979), by which musician Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth ,in her memoir, Girl In A Band states that the compilation was the unproclaimed reason for the dispersing of the short term movement.

However ,it has been said that the term no wave originated from an underground art show ,hosted by Diego Cortez that was held under the name New York/No Wave.

A genre with no consistent features of sound by which it was defined. It’s rather known for its experimental ,indefinite genre infusion including sounds from funk, jazz, blues, punk rock.Their lyrics often sung in a nihilistic and confrontationally crude manner.

No wave bands included bands such as DNA,Mars,Konk.and the Swans and more were included.Although no wave was a unified movement ,the wave had no ‘official’ unified sound ,unlike the punk movement that was going on at that time in London. The punk scene consisted of rebel and combat rock like The Sex Pistols ,The Clash ,The Buzzcocks ,Joy Division and more  that emerged around 1976.

The now wave movement was brief and ended in the early ’80s ,with only a few recordings by the bands.Despite its brief existence no wave has had a continued influence on ‘noisy‘ New York bands such as Sonic Youth who partly rooted out from the movement,to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs of now.

A time that passed  making a way to an era of the next generation of alternative sounds in New York, bands that  of groups like LCD Soundsystem and Interpol and the many more underway.
