VIDEO Big-Rig Crash & Fire With Multiple Injuries Shuts Down I-680 In Walnut Creek, California

WALNUT CREEK — A big-rig crash and fire with multiple injuries has halted the Friday morning commute on I-680 just south of State Route 24.

Reports indicate the big-rig may have caught fire near the Main Street on-ramp in Walnut Creek shortly before 7 a.m.

The big-rig driver was injured, along with three people hit by flying debris which caused several vehicles to overturn.

The fire from the big-rig spread to vegetation on the side of the highway but is now out, according to Contra Costa Fire spokesperson Robert Marshall.

All of the northbound lanes are closed. As of 8:20 a.m., southbound traffic is slowly moving through.

Crews are working to clear the remaining debris and 100 gallons of diesel fuel. CHP estimates northbound I-680 will reopen around noon.

No word on what caused the explosion.
