A police officer shot and killed a gun-wielding motorist during a traffic stop on I-75 in Bartow County, officials said.
Georgia Bureau of Investigation spokesman Scott Dutton said an officer from the Emerson Police Department initiated the traffic stop near Ga. 113/Main Street shortly before 11 a.m. The driver of the vehicle pulled out a gun and pointed it at the officer, who fired at the driver, Dutton said.
The man later died, Dutton said.
The GBI has been asked to investigate the shooting. No further information was immediately available.
Two northbound lanes of I-75 were temporarily blocked at exit No. 288, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation.
“All lanes have been reopened, but delays are over an hour and there are over 5 miles of backup,” GDOT said in an alert on its website. “Motorists are advised to use alternate routes.”
