UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey suffered her first career loss to Holly Holm on Saturday night, losing via knockout after a head kick in the second round of the main event.
Holm, a renowned boxer, had a clear game plan. From the outset, she opted to stick and move, keeping on the defensive and attempting to let Rousey tire herself out. Holm landed a few decent blows in the third round, survived a Rousey takedown and even ended up on top briefly late in the first round before letting Rousey right back up again to keep the standup game working.
In the second round, the action was much of the same before Holm caught Rousey completely unawares with a roundhouse kick to the neck. Rousey went down in a heap and Holm pounced, landing strikes to the jaw before the fight was waved off.
Saturday’s fight was only the second time a professional Rousey fight had gone past the first round.
Rousey’s career record now stands at 12-1. Holm, now the second UFC bantamweight champion in history, improves to 10-0.
