A 35-year-old woman died after jumping over the railing at the Providence Place Mall parking garage on Thursday night.
The Providence Police Department, as well as a mall spokesperson, said the woman was running from Nordstrom store security through the garage before leaping over the railing.
The woman was accused of shoplifting from Nordstrom. Loss prevention personnel from the store tried to apprehend her.
She eventually made it out onto the parking structure and jumped to the grass below. She was taken to Rhode Island Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Police said the incident took place on the first level, Park Street side of the garage. Still, it was about a 25 foot drop to the ground.
Authorities said they received the call just before 7 p.m., with Providence police responding to the scene.
Officials would not release the woman’s identity because they weren’t sure if the family has been notified. It is also not known what she may have taken from the store.
According to Nordstrom’s website, the company’s security policy states that loss prevention personnel are allowed to apprehend and detain customers and staff if necessary. However, the site did not note whether they are allowed to leave the store.
