Vin Diesel Announces ‘Riddick 4’ and a TV Series Spinoff

Vin Diesel sure does like to talk about things, and he’s got a pretty big megaphone with which to do so. The actor is keen to taking to social media to tout impending announcements or, in the case of Guardians of the Galaxy, literally tease a job that he doesn’t even have yet. Regardless, sometimes this works, and sometimes we get things like Diesel hinting at himself directing Fast & Furious 8, which, even with all that 2015 money, Universal was never going to allow.

Enter Diesel’s latest announcement: something to do with The Chronicles of Riddick. The actor led the first installment of the sci-fi franchise, Pitch Black, which then led to two more sequels, The Chronicles of Riddick and most recently, Riddick. Now Diesel has taken to Instagram to announce that not only is franchise writer/director David Twohy getting ready to start writing the fourth installment of the series, but the franchise is expanding into the TV realm with something called Merc City.

So that’s happening. Maybe. Possibly. To be fair, it seems fairly plausible that the TV show might actually get off the ground. One imagines something like that launching on a cable network like Syfy or TNT. Another film, however, is less certain. Riddick grossed $98 million worldwide against a reported budget of $38 million, which isn’t a disaster but isn’t necessarily super profitable either.

It’s possible Diesel and Twohy repeat their formula for Riddick, which was to make it for a low budget, and Diesel is certainly a draw for worldwide box office. His most recent non-Fast & Furious film was The Last Witch Hunter, which pretty much bombed domestically with a paltry $26 million, but has raked in over $72 million overseas. So when it comes to how real Riddick 4 is, it really could go either way.

Diesel is currently focused on a third installment in the xXx franchise that no one asked for, which recently secured D.J. Caruso (Disturbia) as its director. He’s also hard at work producing the eight Fast & Furious movie, which begins production next year with Straight Outta Compton helmer F. Gary Gray directing.

What say you, folks? Are you keen for more Riddick chronicles? Would you watch a TV show spinoff? Do you think these things will actually happen? Sound off in the comments below.

Tributes have begun pouring in for the star, with Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro tweeting to say: “RIP the great Rutger Hauer: an intense, deep, genuine and magnetic actor that brought truth, power and beauty to his films.”

KISS musician Gene Simmons wrote: “Sad to hear Rutger Hauer has passed away. He was always a gentleman, kind and compassionate. Sending our condolences and prayers to his family, friends and fans.”

Hauer was born in Breukelen in the Netherlands and did stints in both the merchant navy and army before he became an actor.

He got his big break in 1969, when he became the lead in TV series Floris.

Away from acting, Hauer launched The Rutger Hauer Starfish Foundation, which aimed to raise awareness of HIV and AIDS, especially within children and pregnant women.

Issuing a statement following his death, the foundation said: “The Rutger Hauer Starfish Association announces with infinite sadness that after a very short illness, on Friday, July 19, 2019, Rutger passed away peacefully at his Dutch home.

“He leaves his beloved wife Ineke, after they have been together for fifty years.

“We at Starfish will always cherish the many unforgettable memories we have of Rutger and his dedication to the Rutger Hauer Starfish Association.

“One of Rutger’s last wishes was that Starfish should continue its charity activity and its fight against the AIDS disease, and with Ineke’s precious help, involvement and direction we will follow Rutger’s wish and will do our best to carry on Rutger’s inestimable legacy.”

The critic tweeted, “It’s like something is off here, maybe the lions look too real for voice-overs. And I know Nala is Beyonce but it sounds very Beyonce. It’s so distracting…”! Another also posted, “Okay I’m going to be brave and say this but I don’t think I like Beyonce as Nala. I wish she had just done the soundtrack but her voice doesn’t suit Nala. Hope I’m wrong…”!

Another Twitter user suggested that Queen Bey should have tried to change her voice to suit the character, saying her voice is “too distinct for this. It doesn’t even sound like she attempted to change the sound of her voice for the character”.

Robert Pattinson is Officially The New Batman, Film Releases in 2021

After weeks of speculation, Robert Pattinson has officially inherited the keys to the Batmobile from Ben Affleck

The actor who shot to fame as a vampire in the Twilight films will take on another nocturnal hero: Batman. Pattinson, 33, inherits the role from Ben Affleck, whose tenure came to an end after the critical and commercial disappointments of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League.

Pattinson’s first film as the billionaire crime fighter Bruce Wayne, who assumes a full-body black costume to battle baddies in Gotham City, will be titled The Batman, directed by Matt Reeves, and set for release in June 2021. Originally scheduled to start shooting in 2017, The Batman will be the first solo Caped Crusader film to form part of the DC Extended Universe.

The Warner Bros studio confirmed to Variety on Friday that Pattinson had beaten the other names on the shortlist – which included Nicholas Hoult – to the role. Following breakthrough performances in the Harry Potter and Twilight franchises, Pattinson has spent some years steering clear of the mainstream, instead working with directors such as David Cronenberg, David Michôd, the Safdie brothers and James Gray.

His recent collaboration with the French director Claire Denis, erotic sci-fi mystery High Life, won Pattinson considerable acclaim. He also stars in one of the best-reviewed films from this year’s Cannes festival: Robert Eggers’s The Lighthouse, an intense psychodrama set in 19th-century Maine.
